Most visitors to France are fascinated by the most striking feature of Germany’s neighbour to the west: its impressive variety. An exaggeration? Hardly. As former President Charles de Gaulle once remarked: “how can you possibly govern a country that produces more than 360 types of cheese?” France is certainly the cheese producer par excellence, but de Gaulle was not thinking primarily of his country’s cheeses when he made his comparison: he was in fact referring to the great differences between the regions of “La Grande Nation”.

And these are immense. Situated between the Alps and the Atlantic Coast, between Normandy and the Mediterranean, France is notable not only for the contrast between the metropolis and the provinces. Various cultures, as well as France’s varied history, have also left their mark. Castles, palaces, monasteries, cathedrals, historic old towns and many architectural masterpieces, created by master builders of the past, rank among the world’s most famous. Anyone who enjoys big city life, or beach resorts, or longs for a rural idyll, anyone who enjoys sports, is interested in art, museums and festivals, or has a taste for the country’s exceptional wines and cheese, will find what they are looking for in France.
