THE GATEWAY TO THE WORLD
The Hamburg harbour makes up the unique charm of this world-class city. Germany’s ’gateway to the world’ – referred to as one of Europe’s largest harbours – the city is a fascinating microcosm. From the traditional fish market – where early risers can sample the delectabilities of the North Sea – to the bars along the Elbe beachfront, where partyers gather on warm summer evenings to enjoy BBQs and picnics, everywhere one can see clear evidence of the appreciation for lifestyle along the waterfront. Also impressive is Speicherstadt (’storage city’), another Hamburg landmark. Here lies the world’s largest contiguous storage building complex, distinct through its architecture and idyllic ambience that one would not expect in an industrial area. Beautiful brick buildings, little towers, and special gables draw the public to the Speicherstadt.
Nightlife in Hamburg
One thing that cannot be missed when visiting Hamburg is a tour around the Reeperbahn. The colourful activity all around the Reeperbahn is unique. Numerous old taverns and pubs, bars, discos, cafés and diverse shops; and live clubs have established themselves here, ones in which even the Beatles performed in their time. Serious entertainment afficionados will find that venues like the Operetta House and Schmidt’s Theatre, the Café Keese – and many others – offer endless ways to enjoy the evening. And after New York and London, Hamburg is the world’s third largest city for hosting musicals. In addition to the musical theatres, this Hanseatic city also offers a multitude of operas, concert halls and theatres.
