FIRE SPEWING MOUNTAINS
Guatemala is the westernmost country in Central America. In the north and northwest it borders Mexico; Belize in the northeast; and Honduras and El Salvador in the east. The diverse topography of the country is made up of a fascinating combination of volcanos and jungle. In the western highlands there are over 30 fire spewing mountains, up to 3800 metres high, some nights illuminating the sky with their red glow. Needless to say, there is also a high risk of earthquakes in this region. While the heavily farmed Pacific region consists of huge plantations and long, mainly black sand beaches, the short Caribbean coast has no beaches but instead is rich in culture.
THE MOST BEAUTIFUL NATURAL WONDERS
The indigenous culture in Guatemala is more active than in most other Central American countries, be it in the age old ruins of Tikal, the Indian-Catholic rituals of Chichicastenango, or the colourful clothing of most inhabitants. The Indian people are exceptionally welcoming, and previously remote towns entice one with the most beautiful natural wonders in all of Central America.
