Nerja is a small resort town with a population of around 20 000 on the Costa del Sol, some 50 km east of Malaga. The old town was built on a hill above the sea and is one of the most picturesque little towns in the region. White houses, meandering alleys, palm trees, typically Andalusian courtyards and gardens give the town a relaxed southern atmosphere that is otherwise virtually impossible to find in the tourist centres of the Costa del Sol. Tourism has of course not avoided Nerja completely, as is apparent above all during the summer holidays. Despite the different types of vacation properties and hotels built in recent years, Nerja has retained its typically Andalusian look and is one of the quieter spots on the Costa del Sol.
IDYLLIC BAYS
The best known square in Nerja is the Balcon de Europa, an observation terrace high above the sea, from which there is a superb view over the ever changing rocky coast and the mountains behind it. Adjacent to the terrace there are glorious gardens. Many small bays with sandy beaches line the coast on both sides of the town. A few kilometres north of the town lies Cueva de Nerja, an 800 km long system of caves. In August, there is a summer festival with music and ballet because of the acoustics. The “white villages” in the surrounding countryside are popular excursion destinations, where the Bodegas north of Nerja produce Malaga wine, the sunny landscapes of Andalusia or famous cities such as Granada, Cordoba, Seville, Jerez, and Cadiz.
