THE WILD ISLAND IN THE SOUTH
Tasmania- 240 km from the Australian mainland is a world of its own. This group of islands consists of Tasmania, Macquarie and many smaller islands. The highest point is Ossa Mountain, 1617 meters high, located in the central plateau, crisscrossed by many rivers and lakes.
VAN DIEM´S LAND
The first European to land on the island of Tasmania was the Dutch seafarer Abel Tasman in 1642. The British claimed the main island for themselves in the 18th century, following which British and later free settlers arrived at what was by now known as Van Dieman’s Land. In contrast to its lively history, the island’s relaxed lifestyle is shaped by the wild, beautiful landscape and friendly people who make visitors feel welcome.
COLONIAL HERITAGE IN HOBART
Hobart is the capital of Tasmania and at the same time the second oldest settlement in Australia. Hobart, lying at the mouth of the Derwent River, is a unique city: small enough to be familiar, big enough to satisfy most demands. A mixture of historic colonial architecture with cobble stone streets and modern office building, shopping centres and hotels, against the spectacular backdrop of Mount Wellington. With 200 000 inhabitants, life moves at a more leisurely pace than in the cities on the mainland. Yachts and fishing boats on the river, art and souvenirs on the “Waterfront”, hotels and pubs, as well as picturesque parks and gardens make up the image of the city and exude a pleasant way of life in a relaxed atmosphere.
