LAND OF EXTREMES
Opposites attract, this old proverb is particularly appropriate for the United States. Not only scenic, but also cultural opposites abound in the land of boundless opportunity. From the gentle green hills of Vermont in the east to the tropical vegetation of Florida in the south and the dry barren prairies and deserts in California. Cowboys who wipe the sweat from their brow and Hollywood actresses floating on a cloud of perfume typify American society, as do hardworking Chinese shop keepers with their large families and Afro-American jazz musicians coaxing unforgettable sounds from their trumpets in the streets of New Orleans.
ENDLESS HORIZONS
America appeals to Europeans because of its apparently endless horizons, enormous cities and unsettled, in parts untouched wilderness. We think we are familiar with the country, its nature, and its cities from films and television. But America is far more complex than it is generally portrayed: the similarity with our ideas is often just as striking as the differences. The America that we know from postcards, films and glossy magazines is easy to spot. The other America with its true, incredibly conflicting, fascinating face must first be discovered with open eyes and an open mind.
