COASTAL CITY WITH SPANISH ROOTS
The coastal city of San Diego is in South-western California, close to the border with Mexico. It is described as the cradle of civilization and is the historic core of the history of California, as it was the site of the first Spanish mission. The wooded hillsides, the Pacific Ocean and the desert bordering the city are the hallmarks of the scenery. Here the Spanish heritage of the early years is encountered at every turn. Even the skyline is an interesting blend of glass skyscrapers, Jugendstil mansions and Moorish towers. The “Gaslamp Quarter”, the city’s original harbour and trading centre, has been restored and is today very popular with artists. From “Cabrillo Point” on the southern tip of the Loma Peninsula, which protects the city from the Pacific waves, provides a superb view of San Diego. Although San Diego is California’s second largest city, it makes the impression of a health resort, due to the year round mild sunny climate and the glorious bathing beaches.
EXCURSION TO MEXICO
San Diego is also famous for its zoo, located in the expansive “Balboa Park” and Sea World, the underwater adventure park. A little diversion to Mexico is a virtual must. But also Lake Cuyamace in the hinterland and the old mining town of Julian are worth a visit. The mix of the American lifestyle, Mexican flair and Spanish heritage give this city a unique charm, which must be experienced.
