The Goethe-Institut is the cultural institute of the Federal Republic of Germany. It is active worldwide, promotes knowledge of the German language abroad and contributes to international cultural cooperation. In addition, the institute promotes a comprehensive view of Germany by providing information on the cultural, social and political life of the nation. The Goethe-Insitut offers a total of five different diplomas.
Start Deutsch 1
Start Deutsch 1 is a language test to identify an elementary knowledge of German. It is aimed at adults and young people from age 16 on.
Start Deutsch 2
Start Deutsch 2 is a language test to identify an elementary knowledge of German and builds on the Sart Deutsch 1 language diploma. It is also aimed at adults and young people from age 16 on.
The Goethe-Zertifikat B1 is taken after the Zertifikat A2. With this exam you are able to prove basic knowledge of the German colloquial language, which enables you to get along in the language in all important daily situations (B1). You have mastered all of the essential grammatical structures and are in the position to lead a conversation about situations of daily life. You are likewise able to demonstrate simple statements orally and in writing and to understand texts from everyday life.
Zertifikat Deutsch für den Beruf (ZDFB)
With this certificate, you demonstrate that you have can communicate orally and in writing in everyday business situations in German (B2). This means that you are capable of understanding simple texts and writing everyday German related to routine business procedures as well as responding appropriately in everyday situations.
The Goethe-Zertifikat B2 is a new test that was introduced worldwide in the autumn of 2007. With the Goethe-Zertifikat B2, you demonstrate that you possess good knowledge of everyday standard German. This language knowledge enables you to express yourself correctly, both orally and in writing to some extent and that you understand more difficult texts.
The TestDaF certifies language abilities on the levels of ability from B2 to C1. All institutions of higher education in Germany accept the language exam for admission to study and as proof of your knowledge of German in relation to scientific subjects and academic professions.
With the Goethe-Zertifikat C1, you are able to prove that you can understand a wide range of complex, long texts and can also grasp implicit meanings. You can use the language in social and professional life or can use it in learning and education effectively and flexibly. And you can express yourself clearly, structurally and in detail with complex facts and, thereby, applying various means to appropriately link texts together.
Goethe-Zertifikat C2: Grosses Deutsches Sprachdiplom
This qualification certifies your language knowledge on the highest level of proficiency — C2. With this qualification, you master the language almost as a native speaker and can apply this effortlessly in writing and orally. You can speak spontaneously and fluently about complex topics and contexts. This qualification is recognized by institutions of higher learning and universities as proof of language abilities for admission.
THE EUROPEAN LANGUAGE CERTIFICATE (telc)
telc GmbH was founded in 1968 and is a partner of the Federal Government for the examination of language skills within integration courses. However, the company does not only offer German language certification, but also diplomas for a total of ten languages. The German telc exams are offered from levels A1 to C2. These exams verify language readiness and are recognized as a performance record, especially in a commercial or international environment. The exam consists of reading and listening comprehension as well as an oral section. Information and exam locations are available upon request.
