Rugged coastline, beaches, green hills, picturesque villages, olive groves and vineyards – if you love variety, then a language study trip to Portugal is just the ticket.

Portugal is one of the most diverse countries in Europe. The majority of the country is surrounded by the Atlantic Ocean. Pretty seaside resorts and quaint villages can be found nestled amongst a stunning landscape of olive groves, vineyards and wheat fields. The North is damp, cool and correspondingly green. The Peneda-Gerês National Park is a great destination on your language study trip to Portugal. This lush green nature reserve includes lakes, streams, waterfalls and terraced agriculture. In contrast, the South enjoys plenty of sunshine. The Algarve is the most popular holiday region in Portugal and is also home to one of our language schools. The south coast is characterised by bizarre rock formations and white sandy beaches. Some sections of the coastline are even believed to offer some of the best surfing conditions in the world.

As a result of the Salazar dictatorship, Portugal was isolated from the rest of Europe for more than 40 years and has spent the best part of the last century in a state of slumber. All around it, progress went ahead almost unnoticed – giving Portugal its reputation as an oasis for stressed Northern Europeans. If you're keen to find peace and tranquillity during your language study trip to Portugal, you should explore the sparsely populated inland and thus avoid the hordes of tourists who flock to the South during the holiday season. Portugal's strong Catholic influence and long dictatorship make it a traditional and conservative country. The religious festivals, known as "Romarias", honour various Saints and are taken very seriously – as are the results of local football matches.
